Mission

The mission of the Schlief School of Accountancy is to provide educational processes that enable students to acquire the requisite knowledge and skills for successful careers in the accounting profession and allow students in related disciplines to obtain a basic understanding of accounting.

Objectives

The School of Accountancy offers an integrated Master of Professional Accountancy program, a stand-alone MPAC program, and courses that support the MBA. The overall objective of the school is to provide an academic program that enables students to prepare for entry into the profession of accountancy. The curriculum is intended to increase the student’s understanding of accounting and to be responsive to the changing requirements of the accounting profession.

The MPAC/BBA program leads to a Master of Professional Accountancy for those who are primarily interested in pursuing a career in professional accounting. The program contains 150 hours of course credit and complies with all the educational requirements for those who wish to take the CPA exam. A bachelor’s degree is awarded simultaneously with the MPA. The five-year degree program covers concepts of financial accounting, managerial accounting and information systems for accounting and management. These subjects make up the core of the accounting curriculum. Students also gain critical knowledge in the areas of auditing and taxation. If desired, students also may obtain a forensic accounting and analytics certification. This certification covers concepts of fraud, data analytics and legal principles related to forensic accounting.

The stand-alone MPA program has a 30 semester-hour core. Leveling courses cover the common body of accounting knowledge that would normally be found in an undergraduate curriculum. Depending on the student’s background, some or all of the leveling courses may be waived by the MPA director. For a course to be waived, the student must normally have completed comparable undergraduate or graduate business coursework from a regionally accredited university with grades of B or better within the last five years. The stand-alone program contains the same 30 graduate hours described above. As part of this program, students are eligible to choose the forensic accounting and analytics track that will allow them to graduate with an additional certification in forensic accounting. Students with two or more years of professional experience also are eligible for the pathway to CPA track, which allows them to work full time while taking fully distance education courses.
