Human Sciences, M.S.

The M.S. in human sciences is an interdisciplinary degree with coursework that emphasizes content in the following areas:

  • Human development and family studies
  • Family and consumer sciences
  • Interior design/health care interior design
  • Food, nutrition and dietetics (only for dietetic interns accepted into the program)

The dietetic internship at SFA is currently granted full accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics, the accrediting agency for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, 120 South Riverside Plaza, Suite 2000, Chicago, IL 60606-6995, 312-899-0040, ext. 5400.

Coursework is selected in consultation with a faculty advisor in human sciences. Two degree options are provided to meet the diverse needs of students: thesis and non-thesis.

Thesis Program


The Master of Science with a major in human sciences with thesis (30-hour program):

  • Major coursework (24 hours): courses in the area of specialization to be selected under advice of graduate program advisor
  • Thesis (6 hours)

Non-thesis Program


The Master of Science with a major in human sciences without thesis (36-hour program) is designed for the student who (1) plans to complete academic requirements of the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics and/or (2) wants to advance professionally in the other graduate content areas.
