Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Program Offerings (A-Z)

The granting of the MFA is based upon achievement of professional competence and mastery in at least one area of studio art.

Mastery implies a high level of knowledge and skill in the theoretical, historical and technical aspects of art production. Such mastery is the basis of quality in higher education and in the general culture, and from this base careers in either category should be accessible. MFA candidates are required to pass the thesis exhibition defense and make a public presentation of their work no later than one week before the thesis defense.

Studio Art Requirement

Students may enter directly into the MFA program or progress from the MA program. The 36 hours required for the MA are included in the MFA curriculum below. At least 12 semester hours of the 36 semester hours required for the MA in studio art and 18 semester hours of the 60 hours required for the MFA must be completed in ARTS 5330  or ARTS 5331 . Students in the regular MFA program who hold an MA from another institution may be required to complete nine semester hours of their MFA coursework in ARTS 5330  or ARTS 5331 .
