The 36-hour nonthesis program offers broad flexibility to meet varying needs and interests. The nonthesis track requirements include HIST 5330 , HIST 5380 , six hours from each of the four fields and six hours of elective history courses. No more than six hours of public history may be used to satisfy the requirements of the nonthesis track. The student who is a public school teacher or who is considering teaching in the public schools may structure with the approval of the graduate program advisor and the department chair a program that includes teacher workshops and classroom teaching apprenticeship experience.

Cooperative programs between the Department of History  and the James I. Perkins College of Education  exist, which lead to professional certificates in the College of Education or to the graduate degree in history or education.
