Admission Requirements

Required Core

The following courses are required for all areas:

• SPED 5315 - Foundations of Visual Impairment Credit(s): 3
• SPED 5367 - Trends in Educating Exceptional Children Credit(s): 3

Special Education without Initial Teacher Certification

To complete the special education major without initial teacher certification (without a concentration), complete the above required core and the following:

• SPED 5332 - Educational Appraisal of Exceptional Children Credit(s): 3
• SPED 5338 - Transition: Birth Through Early Adulthood Credit(s): 3
• SPED 5339 - Introduction to Behavior Analysis Credit(s): 3
• SPED 5361 - Educating Individuals with Low Incidence Disabilities Credit(s): 3
• SPED 5362 - Instructional Strategies for Exceptional Learners Credit(s): 3
• SPED 5364 - Early Childhood Special Education Credit(s): 3
• SPED 5365 - Educational Programming-Autism Credit(s): 3
• SPED 5366 - Assistive Technology Credit(s): 3
• ECED 5350 - Introduction to ECH Research Credit(s): 3
• ECED 5355 - Advanced Research in ECH Credit(s): 3

Area of Concentration

Complete one of the following:

• Educational Diagnostician Certification Concentration  
• Orientation and Mobility Concentration  
• Visual Impairment Concentration  

Comprehensive Exam

A final comprehensive exam (either written, oral or both) is required during the last semester of enrollment.
