Objectives of the Department

In its general psychology graduate program, the Department of Psychology seeks to prepare students for additional graduate work leading to the doctoral degree and/or for professional work at the M.A. level in various fields, including college teaching.

The teaching college social sciences online graduate program is designed to expose students to some of the main subfields in psychology and sociology, as well as train students to teach undergraduate psychology and sociology courses at community colleges and/or dual credit courses. The program is a joint venture between the Department of Psychology and Department of Anthropology, Geography and Sociology.

Graduate Assistantships

The department awards a number of 20-hour graduate assistantships each year. Interested applicants should submit an assistantship application form well before the deadline. Admission Requirements

Application deadline for the fall semester is July 15. Review of applications will begin near the end of the spring semester and continue throughout summer. In addition to satisfying general admission requirements shown elsewhere in this bulletin, the applicant must satisfy the departmental requirements shown below:

The applicant must have had, or must take as background work, undergraduate courses in introductory psychology, statistics and research design (or their equivalents).
The applicant must have attained a minimum 2.8 overall GPA. Applicants who do not meet these minimum criteria will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
The applicant should submit three letters of recommendation and a statement of interest detailing undergraduate research, publications or other accounts of relevant work experience.

Facilities for Graduate Work

The department’s facilities consist of more than 20,000 square feet, including space for human research in psychophysiology, behavioral, cognitive, social, developmental, personality and industrial/organizational psychology.

The department has an instructional computing classroom, and students have access to experimental and analytical software supporting the psychology curriculum. The department also has a variety of active research laboratories with ample space for conducting psychological research. Finally, the department has office space for graduate assistants.
