Objectives of the Department
The Department of Mass Communication offers graduate work and research opportunities for qualified students to prepare them for careers in the existing and emerging media industry and/or to prepare students to pursue studies toward a doctorate. Depending upon courses selected, the MA in mass communication will prepare students for careers in the fields of advertising and public relations, journalism and broadcasting in the 21st century.
The Master of Arts in mass communication’s program learning goals include that students will:
- demonstrate a comprehension of theories central to the mass communication discipline
- understand, design and conduct research in mass communication
- demonstrate knowledge of legal and ethical principles that guide media industry decisions
- demonstrate knowledge of the historical context and societal implications of the media industry
- and demonstrate a comprehension of evolving trends in the media industry and learn to think critically about the media’s role in the global market.
