Objectives of the Department
The Department of Media and Communication offers graduate work and research opportunities for qualified students to prepare them for careers in the existing and emerging media industry and/or to prepare students to pursue studies toward a doctorate. Depending upon courses selected, the MA in mass communication will prepare students for careers in the fields of advertising and public relations, journalism, broadcasting and social media.
The M.A. in Mass Communication has the following program learning goals:
- Students completing the M.A. in Mass Communication will demonstrate a comprehension of theories central to the mass communication discipline
- Students completing the M.A. in Mass Communication will understand, design, and conduct research in mass communication
- Students completing the M.A. in Mass Communication will demonstrate knowledge of legal and ethical principles that guide media industry decisions
- Students completing the M.A. in Mass Communication will demonstrate knowledge of the historical context and societal implications of the media industry
- Students completing the M.A. in Mass Communication will demonstrate a comprehension of evolving trends in the media industry and learn to think critically about the media’s role in the global market.
