Mission
Our mission is to provide a robust and effective learning experience that develops science, technology, engineering and mathematics educator-leaders with deep content knowledge, expertise with research-supported pedagogies, and the ability to create learning environments that foster community between students with diverse backgrounds and help them to become lifelong learners.
Overview
The JacksTeach program prepares students to earn science or mathematics teaching certification while pursuing a four-year undergraduate degree. Students majoring in biology, chemistry, mathematics, or physics complete all secondary (grades 7-12 or 6-12) teaching certification requirements along with their science or math undergraduate degree by adding the JacksTeach concentration to their degree plan. Students seeking to teach mathematics or science at the middle school level (grades 4-8) complete all certification requirements by pursuing a major in Mathematics for Teaching Middle Grades or Science for Teaching Middle Grades. JacksTeach works with academic departments in the College of Sciences and Mathematics and with the James I. Perkins College of Education to immerse students in a curriculum geared towards STEM education.
All students in the College of Sciences and Mathematics are encouraged to try out teaching through introductory courses, JTCH 1101 Step 1: Inquiry Approaches to STEM Teaching or JTCH 1203 Inquiry-Based STEM Lesson Design. In these courses, students design and teach lessons in authentic classroom settings under the guidance of experienced STEM teachers. These supportive opportunities allow students to explore teaching as a career path with no long-term commitment.
JacksTeach is a replication of the UTeach program, featuring early field experiences and instructional partnerships with science and mathematics faculty and experienced master teachers. JacksTeach received initial grant funding from the Greater Texas Foundation, the T.L.L. Temple Foundation, and the James I. Perkins Family Foundation.
JacksTeach
The JacksTeach concentration can be combined with a major in biology, chemistry, mathematics, or physics; see degree plans linked below. Students wishing to add the JacksTeach concentration to their degree plan or declare a major in Mathematics for Teaching Middle Grades or Science for Teaching Middle Grades can do so by contacting the College of Sciences and Mathematics advisors at cosmadvising@sfasu.edu. JacksTeach also provides program-specific advising to each of its students.
Students pursuing a JacksTeach concentration are also part of the university’s educator preparation program. Refer to the Educator Certification portion of this catalog in the James I. Perkins College of Education section for specific educator preparation program requirements.
Scholarships
Talented Teachers in Training for Texas (T4) is a National Science Foundation Noyce grant program that supports JacksTeach through scholarships, mentoring, funded job shadowing, and research on STEM teacher development.
JacksTeach also offers grant funded course completion scholarships for students who successfully complete exploratory courses Step 1 (JTCH 1101) and Step 2 (JTCH 1102) or the combined Steps 1 and 2 course (JTCH 1203) with a letter grade of A or B. Other scholarships are awarded as funds are available.
Student Organization
Passion Driven Teaching is a student-led organization for SFA pre-service K-12 STEM teachers that seeks to bring together students who share a passion for teaching science, technology, engineering and math.
JacksTeach is a program of the STEM Education and Research Center.
