Music Theory

Conducting
The conducting track in the Master of Music is designed to provide intense training for students interested in attaining professional-level skills and background in the art of conducting. There are three tracks in the conducting concentration: choral, band and orchestral. Students entering these programs should have substantial undergraduate training in conducting. Applied Instruction

Two hours from: Seminar in Music Literature
Six hours as appropriate to concentration and as assigned by advisor. Music Electives
Five credit hours from MUAP, MUEN, MUMH, MUSI or MUTC prefixes. Music Education: Choral
The music education track in the Master of Music is designed to provide teachers with advanced skills and knowledge to succeed in the public schools or in teaching college. Students may select one of four concentrations: instrumental, choral, elementary/general music or conducting. Students entering this degree should have an undergraduate degree in music. The choral and instrumental concentrations within the Master of Music are available for either face-to-face or online students. Ensemble/Applied Conducting

The music education track in the Master of Music is designed to provide teachers with advanced skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the public schools or in teaching college. Students may select one of four concentrations: instrumental, choral, elementary/general music or conducting. Students entering this degree should have an undergraduate degree in music. The elementary/general music concentration within the Master of Music is entirely web based and may be completed via the internet, though some courses are available in a face-to-face format. This program is designed for individuals who wish to continue their study of elementary/general music methods and pedagogical theory. It is intended for practicing music specialists in the public-private schools. Required Music Education Core

The performance track in the Master of Music is designed to provide intense training for students interested in attaining professional-level skills and background in performing. Students may pursue performance studies in one of five concentrations: keyboard, collaborative piano, voice, pedagogy or instrumental (strings, wind instruments or percussion). The music production track within the Master of Music is designed to further develop compositional, song-writing, performance, production and technical skills of students who wish to pursue careers in academia, music and audio industries, and music performance. Students entering this degree should have an undergraduate degree in music with a strong technical background in the recording arts. Applied Music Production

Three credit hours from MUAP, MUEN, or MUST prefixes. Comprehensive Exam
This requirement applies to the non-thesis concentrations. A final comprehensive exam (either written, oral or both) is required during the last semester of enrollment. Thesis Areas of Concentration
Theory/Composition: Composition Thesis
The theory-composition track within the Master of Music is designed to further develop the creative and analytical skills of students who wish to pursue careers in academia and the professional world. Students may choose to emphasize theory, composition or both. Students entering this degree should have an undergraduate degree in music. All three concentrations within this degree track are available both on campus and online. Composition
