Overview

Thesis optional: Yes

The Master of Science in natural and applied sciences is an interdisciplinary degree program offered through the College of Sciences and Mathematics. Either a thesis or a non-thesis option may be pursued. Students can choose from available concentrations to obtain further training in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or pursue their teaching certification through JacksTeach. In each situation and under the direction of their faculty advisor, students will complete graduate coursework within and outside their chosen concentration.

Graduate students will be assigned to a graduate faculty committee to design a degree plan and to oversee their specific program of study, including the development and administration of pertinent culminating projects and examinations.

Program Requirements

Areas of Concentration


The following is a list of areas of concentration for this degree.  The student will select one area of interest to pursue.  Unless otherwise noted, the student may select one of these areas for:

  • Thesis Track (30 hours):
    • Chemistry
    • Biochemistry
  • Non-Thesis Track (36 hours):
    • Chemistry
    • Biochemistry
    • JacksTeach - Teacher Preparation

Concentration Requirement


Complete 18 graduate level hours of coursework from the concentration of interest.

Non-Thesis Track


General Electives


Complete eighteen hours of general graduate level electives, where six hours must be outside of the concentration, as approved by the program concentration advisor.

Comprehensive Exam


Complete a comprehensive exam (oral, written or both).

General Electives


Complete six hours of general graduate level electives. Hours must be outside of the concentration, as approved by the program concentration advisor.

Thesis


Complete six hours of thesis coursework.
