    Introductory course covering the conditions and psychological characteristics of exceptional children. Special education majors must make a grade of C or better.
  
  • SPED 3341 - Communication Skills for the Visually Impaired


    Credit(s): 3

    This course is designed to provide the student with knowledge and skills that enables him/her to transcribe and read Contracted Braille and Nemeth Code. They also are taught to use the slate and stylus. The course culminates with the administration of the Braille Proficiency Test, which must be successfully completed in order to receive a TExES bar code for the Braille exam.

    This course addresses issues and procedures in teaching independent-living skills to students with disabilities, such as mental retardation, behavior disorders, learning disabilities, physical disabilities and multiple disabilities. A grade of C or better is required for special education majors.

  • SPED 4339 - Introduction to Applied Behavior Analysis

    This lecture course is designed to provide pre-service and in-service special education teachers with information about students with behavior disorders.This is a methods course and, as such, covers a range of topics to assist participants in the planning and implementation of behavior analysis procedures and the principles of behavior management for classroom and community use with students with disabilities.

  • SPED 4341 - Instruction Strategies for the Visually Impaired

    This course is designed to provide the student with knowledge about Functional Vision Evaluations/Learning Media Assessment, resource materials, curriculum adaptations, equipment, current theories and techniques for teaching academic students who are blind and visually impaired.

  • SPED 4360 - Children with Behavioral Disorders and Autism

    This lecture course is designed for preservice teachers and covers the characteristics, methods, and issues of working with children identified as emotionally disturbed or behavior disordered and those that fall on the autism spectrum.

  • SPED 4361 - Practicum in Special Education

    This course enables the student to apply academic experiences in an instructional setting with supervision prior to the student-teaching experience. Students must complete 30contact hours observing andworking with children with special needs. This is a capstone course that is requiredprior to student teaching.   • SPED 4365 - Educational Programming for Students with Autism

    This course provides an overview of etiology, research, characteristics and program components related to children and youth with autism.   • SPED 4366 - Assistive Technology

    This lecture course offers instruction in the use of technology that enhances learning, functioning and independent living for individuals with disabilities. The focus is on both “low-tech” and “high-tech” with an emphasis on new technologies.
