HIST 4318 - Modern Christianity: A Global Perspective

This course is a survey of Christianity in the world from the Reformation to the present. Students will become familiar with many kinds of Christianity across the globe, including Asian, African, Latin American, European and North American Christianities. In each geographic and chronological context, students will explore several themes, including use of sacred texts and the experiences of a typical church service, the relationship between Christianity and politics, and cultural aspects such as marriage and sexuality. Students also will consider Christianity as a series of global systems organized around missions, migration, trade and warfare. Particular attention will be given to the role of colonialism. Assignments in this course are designed to help students gain knowledge about religions of the world and apply that knowledge to their everyday lives and potential careers.
