Theatre, Technical Theatre and Design, B.F.A.

The Bachelor of Fine Arts with a major in theatre is a pre-professional program designed to prepare the student for entry into the theatre profession or for advanced study. Admission and screening procedures for the B.F.A. program normally take place during the spring of the sophomore year. Transfer students will be screened and admitted by the same process in their first semester.

Each student in the program is subject to an annual review procedure that is required to continue in the program. Jury critiques may be required for the following performance courses: DRAM 1351 , DRAM 2336 , DRAM 3321 , DRAM 4120 , DRAM 4321 , DRAM 4224 , DRAM 4327 , DRAM 4328 . Jury projects are conducted during the final two weeks of a semester for the purpose of assisting the student in her/his overall development of professional skills.

The Bachelor of Fine Arts with a major in theatre has three concentrations: acting and directing, stage management and technical theatre and design.  These have slightly different curricular requirements.  This program defines the technical theatre and design concentration.

The Bachelor of Fine Arts with a major in theatre requires a minimum of 42 semester hours of residence (SFA campus) work.  At least 36 of those hours must be in advanced work (courses numbered 300-499 inclusive).

The major in theatre for the Bachelor of Fine Arts includes a professional internship or equivalent that is not to exceed 19 hours of credit.  At least 18 hours of the major coursework must be advanced work, 14 hours of which must be completed in residence.  A grade of C or better is required for DRAM 1362 DRAM 4360  and DRAM 4361 .

Grade Requirements


  • A grade of at least C in each freshman English course (ENGL 1301 , ENGL 1302 )
  • A C average in work completed in the major field
  • A C average in work completed in the minor field

The required averages are based on those SFA courses taken in each category that are included in the student’s official degree plan (CAPP).  Transfer and advanced placement coursework are not included in GPA calculations.
