Nursing (Post RN), BSN

The Richard and Lucille DeWitt School of Nursing  at SFA encourages nurses who have completed their nursing education in either an associate degree or diploma program to obtain the baccalaureate degree in nursing. The RN-BSN online transition track was established for the student who has previously passed the NCLEX-RN and has current licensure as a registered nurse and wishes to obtain the baccalaureate degree. The RN-BSN track courses are online.

Full Admission Requirements

  1. Acceptance to SFA.
  2. Current licensure to practice as a registered nurse and working as a registered nurse.
  3. Overall GPA of 2.5 in prerequisite courses, including transfer courses.
  4. Completed application to NursingCAS RN-BSN track (nursingcas.org).
  5. Prior to admission to the RN-BSN track of the School of Nursing, the University Core Curriculum, Foundation of Knowledge and Pre-Nursing Requirements must be completed.
  • American history and government/political science are not required for entrance into the nursing program. However, they are required by the university for completion of the degree

*Specified cognates must be completed with a grade of C for acceptance into the nursing program.

Admission Process

Students may be admitted based on completion of prerequisites and attainment of admission criteria. When spaces are limited, admission of qualified applicants will be processed in the order received. To be considered for admission, the student must complete the following:

  • Completed application to NursingCAS (nursingcas.org)
  • Complete, official copies of transcripts from all previous colleges and SFA transcript to be submitted to NursingCAS
  • Copies of accepted or denied petitions or petitions being submitted to be sent to School of Nursing;
  • Copy of current licensure to practice as a registered nurse.

Application Deadline - The deadline for application for admission is July 15 for fall admission, Nov. 15 for spring admission, and April 15 for summer admission. Applications received after this deadline will be considered only if vacancies still exist in the incoming class. It is the responsibility of the student to make sure all application materials are received by the NursingCAS system and the School of Nursing prior to the deadline.

Students who have completed courses at other collegiate institutions may transfer credits under the policies of SFA. A maximum of 66 academic semester hours may be transferred from a junior college. There is no limit to the number of senior college hours that may be transferred; however, 30 hours, all of which are advanced (3000-4999 level), must be completed in residence at SFA. Advanced placement credit does not count as hours toward residency.

The Nursing (Post RN), Major  will consist of a 31 hours.

General Electives


The student may be required to complete additional elective hours to complete the degree.

Grade Requirements


  • A grade of at least C in each first-year English course (ENGL 1301 , ENGL 1302 )
  • A C average in work completed in the major field
  • A C average in work completed in the minor field

The required averages are based on those SFA courses taken in each category that are included in the student’s official degree plan (CAPP). Transfer and advanced placement coursework are not included in GPA calculations.

In-Residence Requirement


Undergraduate Degree Programs

Undergraduate degrees require at least 25% semester credit hours completed in-residence.

Undergraduate degrees with 120 hours total degree program hours require a minimum of 30 advanced (upper level) in-residence semester credit hours. The in-residence hour requirement will be fulfilled as part of the individual discipline major, which includes as least 12 advanced in-residence semester credit hours. Minor requirements also may contribute to the total in-residence hours as at least six advanced in-residence semester credit hours are required. The balance of in-resident hours will be fulfilled through additional advanced semester credit hours and may include further major and minor coursework.

Undergraduate degrees with more than 120 total degree program hour requirements will ensure semester credit hours for the specific discipline include at least 25% of total semester credit hours in-residence.
