Objectives
The Department of English and Creative Writing offers a wide variety of courses devoted to the development of critical thinking and writing in many genres. The faculty, a dynamic group of scholars, creative writers and teachers, help students to develop effective and marketable English language skills and appreciation of our literary heritage and the future of English studies. The department offers in-depth study of American, British and world literature; academic, professional and creative writing; and film and digital genres at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
English Honor Society - Sigma Tau Delta
English majors or minors who have completed six hours of English literature (in addition to the freshman English requirement) and who have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and GPA in English of 3.0 are eligible for membership in Sigma Tau Delta, the international English honor society.
Definition of Majors
English
The English, BA consists of a 24-hour core combined with one of three 12-hour tracks. The core is designed to introduce the major areas of contemporary English studies, providing diverse experiences foundational to all students’ professional futures.
The literature track is, essentially, the traditional English major, which focuses on literary genres, periods and themes.
The English secondary education track has been specifically designed to prepare graduates to pass certification exams and to succeed in the high school classroom.
The genre, media and culture track offers students an avenue to explore a more expansive definition of “text,” including film and digital media, and how such works construct and question our world.
Creative Writing
The Bachelor of Fine Arts in creative writing is for students who want the intensity of a conservatory education within a liberal arts degree. This 33-hour program requires a capstone sequence of six hours of senior thesis culminating in the creation of a substantial work of original fiction, poetry and/or creative nonfiction. BFA students are required to minor in literature. A public reading of the student’s work, a selection from the thesis, is required in the senior year.
Every BFA student must take introductory, intermediate and advanced workshops. Students have some leeway to focus on particular genres but are expected to take at least one workshop in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction.
With the consent of your advisor, classes in playwriting and screenwriting may be used to fulfill upper-level electives.
