Objectives
The Department of Government and Sociology includes multiple social science areas of study. The department offers courses that develop the theoretical knowledge and practical essential skills to succeed in several important careers whereby our students can have meaningful, productive careers to make a difference in society. Our government students majoring in our department can select from such career fields as pre-law, practical politics, criminal justice administration, corrections, nonprofit organization management, public administration, law enforcement, court administration, public opinion research, legal assistantship and juvenile justice. Our sociology majors often go into fields such as social work, human resources, policy analysis, community development, nonprofit management and education. We teach students to gather information, think critically, communicate effectively, solve problems and adapt to social change. Our students have opportunities to complete internships and independent studies to work more closely with faculty members on selected research projects.
Beyond our undergraduate programs, our Master of Public Administration and graduate certificate in nonprofit management provide the sophisticated knowledge and skills necessary to advance in public service careers and offer an opportunity for integrating the study of administration with the study of the other social sciences, including economics, geography, history, political science and sociology. Additionally, the national intelligence security studies master’s degree program prepares students to work in the growing field of intelligence and security studies. Courses are designed to maximize student preparation for a wide range of intelligence careers.
Honor Societies
Each curricular pattern or sequence within the department has one or more professional organizations in which students in that area of study are eligible for membership and participation. Sociology majors and minors with at least 10 semester hours of sociology who rank in the upper 35% of their class and who have a GPA of 3.0 in sociology are eligible for membership in Alpha Kappa Delta National Honor Society.
